Note From Midtown Health's Customer Service Department:
It is important to always contact your physician or wound specialist before starting any wound care therapy.
Primer's paste formulation is available as Primer Unna Boot or Primer Unna Boot with Calamine. Either formula contributes to a soothing non-rigid wound environment. Primer is made without preservatives. This is important because patients can have allergic reactions to preservatives. These chemicals are not necessary in the Primer paste formulation because there is no gelatin. Since the gauze used in making Primer Unna Boot is all cotton, it absorbs the paste evenly. In addition, it is woven with a selvage (finished edge) so stray threads do not endanger the wound.
Venous stasis leg ulcers generally occur as a result of a breakdown in the functioning of valves between major veins in the leg. With support from exterior compression combined with ambulation, the muscles and veins clear up the stagnant area that erupts into ulcers. Mobility is important for the ambulatory management of venous stasis ulcers and also for the protection of other healing wounds.
Primer's moisture and comfort make it an ideal first layer of this bandaging method. A second layer self-adhesive bandage is recommended.
Features & Benefits:
- Contains Zinc Oxide paste - bandaging stays moist and comfortable, encouraging ambulation.
- Contains no gelatin - does not harden or cake, retains its moist consistency over extended periods.
- Made without preservatives - non-irritating to patients.
- Non-raveling gauze evenly impregnated with a non-hardening zinc oxide paste.
- Unique, vacuum-sealed pouch prolongs shelf-life and is easy to open.
Primer is wrapped around the lower leg starting at the toes and winding up the leg to just below the knee. At the heel and ankle, pleats or tucks folded into the gauze may improve the smoothness of the application. Some practitioners wind a figure-eight at the ankle as an alternative wrapping method.
Primer Modified Unna Boot: Gauze impregnated with zinc oxide, acacia, glycerin, castor oil, and white petrolatum.
Primer Modified Unna Boot with Calamine: Gauze impregnated with zinc oxide, acacia, glycerin, castor oil, white petrolatum and calamine.
Directions for Use:
1. Begin bandaging with Primer at base of toes, without pressure, keeping foot & leg at rights angle. Continue bandaging beyond ankle, doubling back to ensure molding to contours of leg.
2. Complete bandaging to just below the knee.
3. Apply an elastic adhesive bandage.
